CAT response services: China province hit by record-breaking rainfall

July 22, 2021 - News

Severe flooding overwhelmed Zhengzhou, the capital of China’s central Henan province, after the equivalent of a year’s average rainfall fell in just three days.

The event led to the evacuation of about 100,000 people, the rescue of more than 500 people trapped in subway tunnels, and caused at least 25 fatalities.

Property damage is extensive, with more than a dozen cities affected. Reports include severe flooding of roads and the widespread collapse of homes and structures. Train services have been suspended, highways have been closed, and flights have been delayed or canceled.

More rain is forecasted across Henan for the next three days. The neighboring province of Hebei issued a storm alert for some cities, including its capital Shijiazhuang, warning of moderate-to-heavy rain.
