CAT response services: Earthquake shakes southwestern Mexico

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit near the resort city of Acapulco in southwestern Guerrero state on September 7.

It affected areas hundreds of miles away, including Mexico City. Following the quake, 92 aftershocks were reported, including one that measured 5.2 magnitude.

As of Tuesday night, around 1.6 million people were without power across five states in Mexico. There was damage to phone lines and electrical wiring along with some blackouts reported in Tlatelolco.

The majority of damage impacted wall and floor coverings, windows and signage. In Guerrero, there were reports of structural damage to older buildings, fallen utility poles and the collapse of a church façade. There have been no reports of severe damage.
