CAT response services: New Mexico wildfires continue to burn

May 04, 2022 - News

Hot, dry and windy conditions across the Southwest have led to seven wildfires in New Mexico — torching over 220,000 acres, destroying hundreds of structures, and forcing thousands to evacuate.

The combined Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon fire is the second largest in New Mexico in at least 30 years and has already destroyed more than 170 homes in Mora and San Miguel counties. If the fire continues to grow, more than 15,000 homes could be threatened this week.

New Mexico isn’t alone. This year, wildfires have already burned more than 1.1 million acres, twice the number by this date in 2021, according to fire forecasters. In fact, an above-normal 2022 wildfire season is predicted. Early predictions point to 68,000 to 72,000 fires across the nation burning 8.1 to 8.3 million acres. The national average from 2001 to 2020 was 68,707 fires burning 7 million acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
