CAT response services: Powerful earthquake shakes northern Philippines

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit northern Luzon Wednesday morning, impacting more than 21,000 people in more than 200 towns in 15 provinces. It was felt as far as 400 kilometers away in the capital Manila.

Wide-spread damage has been reported to hundreds of homes, dozens of schools and several hospitals and bridges. The quake also triggered 58 reported landslides and shut down railway services. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said citizens should brace for aftershocks, but has not issued a tsunami warning because the quake was detected inland.
