CAT response services: Typhoon Chanthu hits Philippines, heads towards Shanghai

September 13, 2021 - News

Typhoon Chanthu slammed into the northern Philippines on Saturday, bringing destructive winds and heavy rains.

The storm displaced thousands of people and left several communities flooded and without power.

Now the storm is approaching Shanghai, where hundreds of flights were grounded and tens of thousands of residents were evacuated from at-risk areas. The storm is expected to make landfall this evening. It has already produced eight-meter high waves as its center approached Shanghai’s coast this afternoon, according to local authorities.

The storm, once designated as a super typhoon, was downgraded over the weekend, but Shanghai officials maintained an orange typhoon alert for today — the second-highest warning level.
