Powerful storm slams into California

January 06, 2023 - News

California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency after a powerful storm, fueled by an atmospheric river, slammed into the state on Wednesday — bringing with it high winds, flooding rain and heavy snow.

Wind gusts, some as high as 85 mph, contributed to power outages in Central and Northern California, leaving more than 180,000 homes and businesses without electricity Thursday morning. Several 80-foot trees toppled onto Interstate 280, and evacuations have been ordered in areas prone to mudslides and debris flows. More storms are expected to arrive during the weekend.
